Teaching your dog to walk on a leash

One might think that walking on a leash is innate for a dog, but it is not. Walking on a leash requires training and appropriate equipment.

Walks are for dogs a moment of intense happiness! But to avoid it becoming hell for the masters, it is better to choose the right dog leash and teach your dog not to be afraid of it.

Where can you teach your dog to walk on a leash?

Choose the place wisely so as not to compromise this learning from the start. You can very well start in your apartment, in the form of a game. If you have children, they can handle it; the dog often accepts children's authority better when they can assume it.

Play has the advantage of not stressing the animal, but it must be organized. Then go outside. As much as possible, avoid going outside the first time in busy or busy streets. It is true that visual and auditory stimulation of the animal, from a very young age, is fundamental for its future balance, but the difficulties should not be cumulative, nor should learning be associated with an unpleasant environment.

Street noises may frighten the animal. He must also be "concentrated" to follow your instructions. Passers-by, moved by a puppy, often distract him by calling him or stroking him. In addition, they don't understand that you don't appreciate their attitude. Quiet streets allow you to avoid these situations.

Then try the busier streets during rush hour so that the dog can go out without anxiety at any time of the day. The progress of the learning process in the intensity of the stimulations (noise, passers-by...) should be slow.

How to teach him to walk on a leash?

Always hold the leash floating on the dog's back: it must never be tight. This will allow you to exercise small pulls when you want to bring the animal back to you. The dog should walk close to your leg without ever going past it.

It should not turn around and twist around you on the leash, nor should it turn around continuously. Walking on a leash is not a "forced walk" but it does require some discipline at first. It is advisable to always walk the dog on the same side of the leash. This allows him to know where he stands in relation to you and not to keep moving from one side to the other.

You must also attract his attention, because he will be distracted by all the noises of the street (even if they are few in number). Talk to him, follow his name with the command: "Heel! "If he doesn't respect his position and passes you, tell him "No" and give the leash a little jerk to get him back to his seat.

If he obeys, praise him. If he's dragging behind you, give the leash a gentle pull to pull him back to you. But don't pull the leash all the time. To avoid turning this learning into an exercise, teach him these rules during "pee walks". This should be done naturally.

You can also tap on your thigh to bring the dog next to you at the start. Never give in: don't end the walk with the puppy in your arms. Drag him gently if you have to. Don't go too far away from the house at first, this will allow you to come back easily in case you get tired!

Go out two or three times a day, always presenting the puppy with this walk as a game.

Advice from the educator

It is essential that the dog has a friendly and confident relationship with the leash from a very young age, which he should not feel as a constraint. For the dog, the leash must represent the extension of the hand of its master and thus constitute a bond of friendship and trust.

If the first approaches prove traumatic, the work will be all the more difficult afterwards: it is therefore essential that the puppy sees the leash as a pleasant instrument and not as an enemy, without considering it as a toy.
