Safety ankle brace
How to choose an ankle brace?
According to the type of support (or stage of the sprain)
A small ankle sprain does not require the treatment of a severe sprain with torn ligaments. In the first case, a simple elastic ankle brace with a proprioceptive effect would have sufficed to increase the athlete's vigilance before twisting the ankle. In the second case, a period of immobilization will be indispensable, with an ankle splint or a walking boot, in order to give the joint the rest period necessary for healing.
First criterion before the application of an ankle brace :
the stage of severity of the sprain. Depending on whether the sprain is benign (stretching of the ligaments), moderate (elongation of the ligaments) or severe (tearing of the ligaments), the recommended ankle brace will be different.
The second important criterion before applying an ankle brace:
the level of intensity of the activity performed. A great athlete requires much more support than a sedentary person, and will therefore need a higher level of protection. Similarly, pivot sports (basketball, soccer, handball, volleyball, tennis...), which are more demanding on the ligaments, will require an ankle brace with a more secure support than linear sports (running, cycling, trail...).
Prevention for sports
The proprioceptive ankle brace, also called sports or maintenance ankle brace, is to be used in the phase of sports recovery after a light or medium sprain, and in prevention in high-risk sports, particularly in cases of chronic instability (sprain sequelae).
A proprioceptive ankle brace is an elastic ankle brace that compresses the joint to increase proprioception (perception of the body in space). Indeed, thanks to the compression tissue, the elastic ankle brace stimulates the nerve-muscle couple and increases muscle vigilance around the joint. This is why this type of ankle brace is made to prevent the risk of injury, and not to treat a sprain.
Attention to allow a real proprioceptive effect, it is important to opt for an ankle brace with class 2 compression (controlled pressure between 15 and 20 mmHg) or class 3 (between 20 and 36 mmHg). Usually only ankle supports certified as "medical devices" offer this guaranteed level of compression.
The ankle brace is suitable for the prevention of recurrence for people with a fragile ankle.
For the return to activity after a sprain (light or medium), we advise you to opt for an ankle brace with malleolar inserts, such as the Bauerfeind Malleotrain, which is very popular with athletes, with its visco-elastic pads that increase stabilization and help reduce swelling. The many product details such as the airy 3D knitting, reduced pressure at the edge of the foot, malleolar inserts and high elasticity make this an active ankle brace for top-of-the-range support. Hence its higher price. Available from size 1 to 5, in right or left ankle.
Resumption of activity
After a period of immobilization, the resumption of activity must be accompanied by the wearing of a ligament ankle brace to continue to protect the ankle that is still fragile.
Gibaud's lace-up stabilizing orthosis provides this additional safety thanks to its semi-rigid plastic shell. This type of ankle brace with a semi-rigid shell offers superior support and a high level of protection, which is very interesting to protect against blows when resuming activity (e.g. ball sports). However, this product takes up some space in the shoe and can cause discomfort when worn for long periods of time.
Ankle splint :
immobilization after trauma
After a sprain, it is imperative to go through a period of immobilization (duration to be defined by the doctor according to clinical and/or radiological examination).
Rather than putting a cast on, prescribers equip patients with an ankle splint which plays the same role of immobilization, but is easier to bear over time (possibility of removing the splint to wash oneself...). For a severe sprain, immobilization of the ankle with a rigid splint or walking boot will be necessary. For moderate sprains, a stabilizing splint with moderate immobilization can promote both healing and early rehabilitation.
